Yesterday, I wrote a post at Mommies Coffee Break about Martha – well, actually it’s about two Marthas.
I think Martha in the Bible gets a bad rap sometimes. She’s only mentioned a couple of times, and in one of them she’s certainly not at her best and now the whole world can know about it. (Can you imagine if one of YOUR bad attitudes was written down for history and generations to read about and know?) Obviously, a lot of us can relate to Martha, and the story is an important example of learning to keep our focus and priorities aligned with Christ.
Here’s another take on The Martha Complex that helps explain that better.
I do believe ultimately, it’s about finding BALANCE. God knows we have work to do – He created work FOR us to do. The curse – because of sin – is that our work is sometimes futile, unfulfilling, unsatisfying, and even impossible.
Do you think if Martha had been singing a tune while she worked and served a perfect meal with a smile on her face that we would have heard about it? Probably not. It wasn’t that her work was wrong – it’s that her attitude was wrong.
Attitude. One thing we CAN control and change – it’s within our power to do so, and while Mary could have helped her sister, her attitude was all about loving Jesus. Martha’s was all about herself…
And that’s ultimately the point.
