In our day and age, where foods come from all over the world and the use of pesticides is common, it’s more important than ever to know where your food comes from.  It isn’t always easy to know this – but it is always important.

Grocery Stores have noticed this consumer trend and many of them have a section in the produce and meat areas for “organic” food.  While the FDA is still defining organic, you should read the labels as many of them indicate why their food is labeled as organic. (This site explains how and why a food is certified and labeled organic.)

Here is a nice article addressing why you should consider buying organic food in the first place.

Health Food and Whole Food stores are great sources of organic food – but they may not be as close to you as your favorite supermarket.  Something I’m learning to do is subscribe to sales updates for these stores – they are about 45 – 60 minutes away – and I watch for sales on items we like.  I’m still growing in the organic food knowledge, so anybody who has great direction can share in the comments! =)

Other sources include your local farmers markets.  If you don’t know how to locate one, check out Local Harvest.  This is a website you should bookmark right now and use often. =)  Find a local farmers market, grocery co-op, or even a farm that sells fresh produce and talk to them about the growing methods they use and shop with them.

Find your fresh produce, meats, herbs, and even garden plants at places like these and don’t hesitate to ask the salesperson about the source of the products you are buying.  Even seeds can be treated with chemicals and fertilizers, and the more you know about the soil you use and the seeds you grow – the plants you buy and the foods you eat – the more you can ensure eating healthier, safer foods.

This goes for your health supplements, too.  Vitamins and minerals can contain synthetic ingredients which are tougher (if not impossible) for your body to absorb.  Be sure to look for products that contain organic sources and even address the bioavailability of the ingredients and sources used. (Bioavailability meaning how available the nutrients are to the body and how well they are absorbed by the body).  Not every supplement at a health food store is healthy, so you have to become a label reader. =)  I have more to share about that later…

Would you join me for a cup? I’ve got some Tazo Calm (lovely stuff) or my PG Tips, excellent with a little milk and honey for sweetener.

Yesterday, after writing about cleaning my desk, and then reading Nans post at Moms The Word, and knowing about Bliss Challenge Week 1 at Blissfully Domestic, I tackled the project with some trepidation because I had let my desk go for sooooooo long.  (How many “encouragers” one needs is in direct proportion to the size of the project! lol) more…

Hey Coffee Girls – grab a cup of Joe and a toasted bagel or cinnamon raisin English muffin with cream cheese and settle in.  We’re buried under snow.

Okay – we’re not entirely buried under.  Our sidewalk was shoveled last night and driveway was snow-blowed.  But still – we’ve got lots of snow.  It is a snow day – schools all around us are closed, closing or on delay.  We will be playing in the snow later this morning.  yay!

LOVING. IT.

I have been getting a workout shoveling the driveway and sidewalk – have done that twice in just a few days – so that’s been a good thing.   Other than the back twinges, they’ve been really good workouts.

I’m getting my written recipes organized into ONE Recipe Notebook (okay – one main notebook and one holiday notebook) and that feels really good.  I’m just copying recipes from 3×5 cards onto 6×5 cards (2 to a page) and inserting them into page protectors in a 3 ring binder.  I am keeping the keepsake recipe cards – written out by my grandmother or my mother – and using 4×6 photo page protectors for those.   With tabbed section dividers – my recipe collection is all in one place.  As opposed to a 3 ring binder, a 3×5 file, and a 4×6 recipe book… Condensing and eliminating.  Whew!

This has been a hard week for me, though.  Very emotional.  My hormones are still wacky.  NOT. FUN.  For anyone in my house.  I’m up – I’m down – I’m turned around.  Can’t think straight.  Keep losing stuff.  And just feeling – in general – icky.  Half exhausted, normal cycles have yet to return so it’s wearing on me.  Not to mention the feelings and emotions I’m still processing after my miscarriage.  I keep wondering how long this is going to last.  I’m not rushing through – it’s not even been two months yet – but the physical stuff just keeps me going round & round…  (I’m avoiding birth control pills which always wreak havoc on me despite the promise of a return to normal cycles.  My body is not normal anyway and I just have to let time heal…)  It’s a little like postpartum depression – only there’s no “partum.”

Have had some funny moments, too.  I’m telling you what – my girls have kept me in stitches for the past couple of weeks.  They’re both far too smart for their age and keep saying stuff that just blows me away.

Example:  Tonight Roy came home with a pair of snowboots for Georgie from a gal at work.  They’re cute black snowboots with glittery black fur inside.  So Curly sees them and assumes they are for her.  I tell her they are for Georgie and she is kinda miffed.  Once Georgie puts them on, Curly catches my eye, then hangs her head and says, “I’m a little disappointed.”

Oh my word.  And Curly has been doing some exercises every day.  Jumping jacks, windmills, sit ups, push ups, toe touches and more.  She goes through her routine while I count.  We keep adding new things like stairs.  Tomorrow – I think I’ll join her.

We’ve been talking about eating “helfy” more often and telling her that too much sugar will make her sick and that healthy foods will make her strong is starting to sink in.   If I tell her that she can have only one cookie because two have too much sugar – she’s getting it.  And we’re choosing apples and carrots and popcorn and other things instead…

YAY!

This is good for us because we need to make changes to our lifestyle.  Move more.  Eat less.

My one GOAL for 2010 is to lose 5 lbs every month. I have far more than 60 lbs to lose, but to say I have to lose 60 lbs this year is pretty overwhelming.  So, I decided to set a goal to lose 5 lbs per month.  That’s just over 1 lb per week.

Manageable.  Doable.  No excuse-able…

So there it is – my week in a nutshell.

Although I am very new to freezer cooking myself – as in planning, preparing and freezing meals ahead of time – I am very excited about incorporating this process into my family’s mealtimes.

Getting started is half the battle.  Changing the way you typically do things can be accomplished with a little practice and by starting off small.  Instead of preparing meals for one whole month in one day, start off by preparing 2 or 3 dishes and freezing them.  Schedule them into your week’s menu plan and see how it goes.

Don’t bite off more than you can chew – literally or figuratively – and see how much time and money freezer cooking will save for you.

Do you plan ahead for you week’s menus?  Maybe even for a whole month’s worth of menus?

It can be overwhelming and even difficult to plan many meals in advance in the face of busy schedules and changing moods.  Here are a couple of tricks I’ve discovered that have proved successful in my own family life:

  • Make a list of family favorites.  If your family has a few favorite meals that they love, why not make a list of them – including regular side dishes and desserts – and keep a list of your “Favorite 21″ or “Favorite 15″ family meals!  When you have a whole month to plan for, you can easily rotate these favorites often enough so your family does not get bored with them or tired of them.
  • Work from the same source on a weekly basis.  Select one recipe book or recipe file to use for a set week – then you only have to reference that one source when it’s time to prepare your meals during that time frame.  What a time (and space) saver!  You can include pg numbers next to your menu items, saving time and keeping it simple.
  • Prepare several meals in double proportions and freeze half. This is a GREAT way to save both time and money.  Take advantage of your store’s sales and prepare a dish that your family loves!  You can double the recipe and freeze half.  Develop a system of labeling & dating the items so nothing goes to waste.
  • Don’t forget to try new recipes. This was one of my mom’s favorite hobbies: New Recipes.  And we were always her willing guinea pigs!  It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to meal preparation – so throw in a few new recipes each month to change things up!  You may find a new family favorite recipe that will help you keep things fresh and keep your family satisfied!

Review:  As a busy wife and mom, I really needed to find something that would take less time and save money, too.  I have a pretty small kitchen with little counter space – and the hassle of preparing and cooking every meal at each meal time has been really challenging.  I started looking for ideas online and found many that seemed to be the answer.  Most of them I found to be more time consuming or less frugal than anything else.

Then, I came upon this great e-book. more…
