A few of our local McDonald’s have been running a special on their Iced coffee drinks – only $1 for any size and it lasts through September 30. I have been SO EXCITED! My favorite is the sugar-free vanilla Iced coffee, although my FAVORITE drink is an Iced Caramel Latte. But for $1 – you almost can’t make coffee at home for that price, so it has been a GREAT deal!
I have always been a fan of Starbucks. I don’t always believe everything I hear about, well, everyone – and I know there has been some concern about Starbucks and certain issues – but the truth is, if I didn’t buy from anyone for all these reasons, I’d have to grow ALL my own food, make ALL my own clothes from my own homespun fabric, and create all my own cleaning products and home supplies. Just had to say it.
I’ve not always had good experience with their VIA instant products, however. Some of them have tasted rather bitter. However, the lime refresher is one of my favorites. I’ve tried the Glacé product, and it was just okay. But then I had a coupon, and the VIA products were on sale, so I grabbed the Via Iced coffee. Now, VIA is about $7 a carton for 7 individual servings here. That’s not terrible, but it’s not something I can drink all day every day.
Then I was inspired to try my hand at my own Sugar Free Caramel Iced Coffee at home.
So, I poured an individual packet into a 16.9 oz bottle of water and shook it up good. I poured enough sf caramel syrup to cover the bottom of the glass. Added about 5-6 ice cubes and poured the mixed up coffee into the glass until it was about 3/4 full. Then I poured in half and half until the cup was full. I stirred it a little and
I was rocking my morning to a LOVELY iced caramel latte at home. ahhhhhhh!
Of course you can use instant coffee of any other kind – but there is something about the VIA that blends so smoothly – there are no lumps or chunks or anything else, and the VIA is just slightly sweetened. Each packet has 12 grams of sugar for the whole serving, and because of the way I mix mine up, I end up with 2 full glasses over ice. (Now the Glacé version had twice as much sugar, so it makes a difference what you use!)
It averages just over $1 per bottle mixed, so when I can’t get to McDonald’s or when the “$1 any size” deal is gone, I have a backup plan and can keep drinking my favorite iced coffee whenever I want!
- 1 bottle water
- 1 packet of Via iced coffee mix
- 5-6 ice cubes
- 1-2 Tbsp favorite flavored drink syrup
- half and half
- Open the bottle of water and take a sip to give more room in the bottle.
- Pour in the opened packet of Via coffee mix. Recap the bottle and shake until thoroughly mixed.
- In large class or cup, add ice cubes.
- Pour flavored syrup over ice, followed by bottle of mixed coffee to fill the cup ⅔ or ¾ full. You can adjust this depending on your own preference for cream.
- Add half and half to top off your latte. Stir with a straw and sip to your heart’s content!
