We’ve been slowly easing back into our “morning routine” for school, and yesterday we made a full-on effort to do so. It was not without struggle – or whining – but it was done and that felt pretty good. Considering the fact that school starts next week, we had to commit to routines before that first day of school hits, right?
Says the tired mom with the iced coffee in hand…
This is how we practice “Getting Ready for School.”
I call it just that: Morning Routine. We have a schedule we used last year and I said we are getting back into our “Morning Routine”. It was met with the appropriate (and some not-so-appropriate) moans and groans. We reviewed the schedule, we got through it and the girls actually did pretty well with it. Our morning routine goes something like this:
- Get up, Get Dressed
- Make Your Bed
- Eat Breakfast, Vitamins & medication
- Brush Hair, Brush Teeth
- Backpack Check
I have one girl who is a morning person and one girl who is not. Neither one of them rarely sleep past 7 am, so we are re-learning how to work around each other and that is probably the BIGGEST challenge. We are adding devotions to our morning routine – but I have yet to figure out when to implement it since they each approach their morning so differently.
Backpacks are packed and we only need to add a few last minute items. We still have to get lunchboxes of some kind, but we will get that taken care of this coming weekend. We had several leftover supplies from last year and we are recycling!
Clothes and shoes are ready, although we need to practice selecting outfits yet, but we’re getting there.
Mommy Planning & Scheduling
I’ve been using a weekly / monthly calendar for my planning for months, but starting yesterday, and for the next 2 weeks, I’ll be using a daily calendar. We have a LOT of different things going on – hair cuts, doctor appointments, I have work trainings, work events at night – it’s a lot to try to remember, so I’m adjusting the normal planning schedule temporarily. I have my smartphone calendar, but there is something very satisfying about seeing things – all my things – written on a piece of paper that can be crossed off or checked off – and it helps me break down everything into smaller pieces. It’s also where I do my blog planning, my household chore lists, and lots of other things.
So that’s how we are getting ready for Back to School.
